We inject a concentration of your own blood's platelets to accelerate healing after injury. PRP injections can help injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints recover more quickly.

To prepare your PRP injection, we draw blood, then run it through a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. When injected into your injured or diseased tissue, these activated platelets release growth factors that stimulate and your body's healing response.

How do PRP injections work?

Blood has a liquid portion called plasma and a cell-rich portion consisting of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelet cells. Platelets are important for proper tissue healing and clotting. 

With PRP, blood is removed from the individual being treated and is then spun in a centrifuge to obtain plasma with a greater concentration of platelets in it than the original plasma (1). Platelets are essential for tissue healing because of the growth factors they contain that can stimulate the healing process (2).

What can PRP Injections help treat?

PRP can help treat injuries that have a long healing time, such as lateral epicondylitis (“tennis elbow”), Achilles tendinitis, and rotator cuff tendinitis (2,5). These are all types of tendinitis, which is inflammation of the tendon.

PRP injections can also aid in recovery from patellofemoral pain, knee osteoarthritis, and ligament sprains or tears (2,5,6). PRP growth factors can promote cartilage regeneration as a treatment of osteoarthritis.

PRP has also been used to facilitate wound healing by speeding up the regeneration of the tissue (8).

Common Questions

PRP injections can take several weeks to produce noticeable results in improving pain and function.

You may experience soreness after receiving a PRP injection. We recommend rest and avoidance of heavy activity for a one to two days after receiving an injection.

Yes, you can receive more than one PRP injection. Up to three injections may be provided within six months with two or three weeks between each one. However, your pain may be completely resolved with a single injection. 

Both drawing the blood and injecting the PRP involve needle insertions, which can evoke mild discomfort.

Steroid injections are anti-inflammatory, meaning they are supposed to help decrease inflammation of the injured or painful tissue. However, steroid injections do not always adequately reduce inflammation to sufficiently diminish pain and improve function long-term. PRP injections are meant to help tissue out of the inflammatory cycle and promote long-term relief by promoting tissue healing via increased growth factor concentration.
