We see a large number of men and women with headaches in our Tallahassee, FL office, and Florida Wellness & Rehabilitation Centers has been able to help many of them. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that half of all adults have difficulties with some type of headache disorder, so this actually isn’t a surprise. One of the most common types of headaches which our patients endure is cervicogenic headache which, fortunately, chiropractic can commonly help.
What is a Cervicogenic Headache?
A cervicogenic headache is one that comes from issues in the cervical spine. It might be a result of an issue with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it may be due to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine produces squeezing or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can contribute to headache pain.
How can you tell if the headache you are experiencing is a cervicogenic headache? Other than obtaining a diagnosis from a healthcare specialist, a frequent symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or pain in your neck. This is occasionally combined with pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.
How Chiropractic Helps
Seeing that cervicogenic headaches will not subside until whatever issue is causing them is remedied, it is important to receive treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that can provide a considerable amount of relief.
In one study published in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, experts looked at 80 people who had frequent cervicogenic headaches. Fifty percent got chiropractic care and the other half engaged in light massage therapy. Each participant was examined 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was discovered that chiropractic delivered the most beneficial effects.
In particular, this study uncovered that chiropractic adjustments offered patients more pain relief and decreased the frequency of headaches that occurred. What's more, it also reduced the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
